Gwyneth Paltrow is trying to make a mark in her new California community - even holding a baby as she hosted an intimate event to promote her Goop skin care line earlier this month.
Actress-turned-lifestyle-guru Paltrow purchased a $4.9 million home in the ritzy seaside community of Montecito, just a mile from Oprah Winfrey's $50 million estate on March 25.
And less than two months later, on May 20, she hosted an intimate event to promote Goop (by Juice Beauty) at Cosbar on the trendy Coast Village Road in the heart of Montcito.
Paltrow's Goop brand has long been criticized for its over-the-top, pricey and strange suggestions about travel, health, exercise and food.
But despite the criticism, the 43-year old Oscar winning actress-turned-businesswoman drove herself to the store for the event, parked in the back, and arrived on time at 4.30pm.
Speaking to the twenty or so invited guests, Paltrow blushed as she admitted she was a bit nervous at such a small gathering.
'Excuse me if I kind of geek out!' she joked to the small crowd.
She said that she was inspired to get into the skincare business by her daughter Apple, now 12.
'When she was a baby, I was just thinking about, what am I putting on her body? Is it safe?' Paltrow, who also has a ten-year-old son named Moses, said.
After her ten-minute speech, she took questions from the audience, and couldn't resist asking if she could hold a newborn baby girl someone had brought to the event.
'Oh my goodness, she's so precious!' she said to the small crowd, cooing as she held the baby in her arms.
While Paltrow famously 'consciously uncoupled' from her ex-husband Chris Martin, 39, last year, she quickly took up with Glee writer/producer Brad Falchuk, 45.
According to a resident, Montecito is the perfect low key place to have a fresh start for someone like Paltrow, who's worth an estimated $60million.
One resident tells the Daily Mail Online: 'You can bump into Oprah at the local bookstore [Tecolote] and Ellen Degeneres antique shopping and no one bats an eye. They're just treated like anyone else. No one who lives here asks for an autograph or for a selfie with them.'
And by having the first 'intimate' Goop event ever in her new town, Paltrow has signaled that she wants to be a part of the community, says a source.
She may be planning to get re-married and start fresh, and this is certainly the perfect place to do that.'
Montecito is almost a two-hour drive north along the coast from Los Angeles, but it is indeed a world away in terms of privacy from the public eye.
'Celebrities who move here get privacy, and to them that is worth the millions they plunk down for property,' one resident said.
Residents believe that Paltrow is going to tear down the six-bedroom, seven-bath, 5,022-square-foot home she recently purchased in order to build something more modern and suited to her taste.
'She got a good deal, it's 2.5 acres, on a stunning piece of land. She will have to go through the permit process like anyone else,' a local realtor said.
One guest at the private event was former makeup artist and wife of actor Rob Lowe, 54-year-old Sheryl Lowe.
'Sheryl and Rob have flipped a number of homes in the area so I'm sure Gwyneth will ask her advice about re-doing her new place,' the realtor said of the Lowes.
